• Johnson has reportedly made around £1 million giving speeches since he stepped down as PM in July 2022, and the boss of machinery firm JCB donated more than £20,000 to cover his wedding costs.

Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has recently been the recipient of a large donation from a Thailand-based cryptocurrency investor. According to parliamentary documents released on Friday 13 January, Johnson’s company Boris Johnson Ltd. received a £1 million donation from Christopher Harborne. The money is said to be going towards Johnson’s activities as a former prime minister and not towards a potential new run for the premiership.

Harborne is a pseudonym used by Chakrit Sakunkrit, who funded the Brexit campaign to the tune of £15 million. A source close to Johnson said that the donation was to Johnson’s office, and has not gone straight into Johnson’s pocket. The former prime minister has reportedly made around £1 million giving speeches since he stepped down from the role in July 2022. On top of this, the boss of machinery firm JCB donated more than £20,000 to cover Johnson’s wedding costs.

The money donated to Johnson’s company Boris Johnson Ltd. will go towards supporting his activities as a former prime minister, including those related to his work as a Member of Parliament. Johnson is said to have given several speeches at blockchain company ParallelChain Lab in Singapore for which he earned £250,000.

Given the large amount of money Johnson has received since leaving his position as prime minister, the donation from Harborne has caused some controversy. However, Johnson’s office has been keen to make the distinction between funds to the former PM and funds to his office, and the source close to Johnson has said that the money donated is going towards his activities as a former prime minister and not towards a possible new run for the premiership.
